Long Tube Tapering and Rotary Swaging

Posted on February 26th, 2015

Tapered Aluminium Tube

Raw large diameter aluminium tube tapered over a long distance using our rotary swaging facility prior to coating.

Within our range of metal tube forming options we offer long length tube swages and tapers. By applying a controlled rotary swaging operation with our Stevens and Bullivant rotary swaging machines we are able to produce swages and tapers in larger diameter tubes and over a range of lengths. Our method can be applied to both steel or aluminium tube for a variety of end uses.

Rotary swaging is capable of producing parts that retain their tensile strength, making them suitable for a variety of applications where this structural property is important. Apart from the engineering properties, of this type of swage, long sweeping tapers also have aesthetic appeal, where the appearance of parts may be of high importance, such as for components in furniture, architectural details or product design.

Swaged and tapered tube can be powder coated, or polished and plated, to ensure the finish you require.

Large Diameter Aluminium Tube Cutting

GAA-500-90 Automatic Feeder Saw

Our new GA-500-90 Automatic Feeder Saw allows us to increase throughput of large diameter Aluminium Tube cut lengths.

Our recent investment in a new automatic feeder saw, for larger diameter aluminium tube, has increased the scope and capacity of our tube processing offer. This new equipment is a good example of how our investment strategy, which is driven by our continual focus on providing customers with the service level they require, has paid off in winning new business.

As aluminium specialists we knew we needed a solution that could offer a nice clean cut when taking into account the thicker wall thicknesses found on larger diameter tubes and the different behavioural properties under the saw when compared to smaller tubes. We also required efficient throughput on the saw to allow us to offer competitive pricing to our customers.

Our new Tronzadoras MG GAA-500-90, with its 500mm blade, can accurately cut-to-length tube of up to 155mm (6.1″) diameter to a tolerance of +/-0.05mm, well within the usual requirements for tubes of these dimensions. Precise control of the cutting feed rate supports our quality commitment by allowing us to refine the cut to suit the material thickness and grade, while the integral blade stroke limiter and hydro-pneumatic feeding supports our efficiency and throughput.

We recognise the need to invest in order to provide the quality and speed of service our customers require and our careful financial management continues to allow us to invest quickly at the right time.

Aluminium Tube Bending

Aluminium Tube Bending

Aluminium tube can be pressure bent, to a small or medium radius, without crushing, even at right angles.

At JDR we offer a wide variety of fabrication options for aluminium tube. One such fabrication option is aluminium tube bending.

Depending on the desired outcome there are a number of bending methods that can be applied to aluminium tube. These are, Mandrel Bending, Crush Bending, Pressure Bending and Ring Rolling or Roller Bending.

Mandrel Bending

In cases where the profile of aluminium tube cannot be permitted to crush, or deform, at the point of bend, mandrel bending provides an elegant solution. By inserting a flexible mandrel into the tube the tube wall is supported during the bend operation and maintains its shape.

Crush Bending

Crush bending is often a viable solution where a medium to large diameter aluminium tube needs to be bent to a small radius. Bearing in mind that because bending any tube requires the tube to expand on the outside edge and compress on the inside edge there are limitations. Where tight bends may not be possible using other techniques without the tube snapping or cracking, crush bending overcomes this by indenting the inside edge of the tube thereby reducing the difference between the outside and inside edges and providing more flexibility at the point of bend for a smaller radius.

Pressure Bending

Pressure bending utilises hydraulic arms to bend the tube around a metal form. The metal form produces an accurate radius and supports the inside shape of the tube, while the hydraulic arms can be set to achieve the required angle of bend. Multiple bends can be achieved, by forming the tube through several passes, with accurate results.

Roller Bending

Also known as Ring Rolling, Roller Bending is capable of producing large radius bends, with a good degree of accuracy, making it the ideal technique for production of hoops, rings or arches. This type of bend can also be applied to swaged tubes, allowing production of hoops or arches that may be assembled or disassembled for smaller packages or portability.
